World Cup Stadium Lighting Design: Al Janoub & Khalifa | MASQ

MASQ delivered the lighting design and supply for two FIFA World Cup 2022 venues in Qatar — work recognized with a LIT Design Award in 2022.

Al Janoub Stadium

LOCATION: Al Wakrah, Qatar

CLIENT: Supreme Committee

ARCHITECT: Zaha Hadid Architects

CONSULTANT: KEO

MAIN CONTRACTOR: Midmac Contracting

AWARD: LIT Design Award, 2022

Zaha Hadid Architects' sweeping, curved facade left no straight lines to hide behind. MASQ combined glass-washing technique with perimeter direction poles to uniformly light the curving profile, integrating the lighting into the architecture itself rather than sitting on top of it. Landscape lighting balanced athlete safety with aesthetic ambience, highlighting trees and focal points around the site. MASQ carried the project from concept and light-level validation through supply, aiming, and final confirmation — recognized with a 2022 LIT Design Award

Khalifa International Stadium

LOCATION: Al Rayyan, Qatar

CLIENT: Aspire Zone

CONSULTANT: Al Dar

MAIN CONTRACTOR: Midmac – Six Construct JV (MSJV)

Qatar's first football venue, built in 1976, needed a World Cup-ready expansion without losing its icon status. MASQ built an intelligent LED grid across the stadium's signature arches, capable of serial interfacing and pattern generation, paired with LED pitch illumination and digital floodlights. The facade lighting interacts directly with the roof system, producing dynamic RGB effects that shift with the site's activity — turning a 1976 landmark into a defining nighttime focal point of the Al Rayyan skyline.
